It's brand new
Welcome and thank you for visiting this brand new website. I am building this website because as the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes in Northern New Mexico, I know there are many, many other people like me who need support. My hope is to give a voice to a large territory with many families who are touched in some way by diabetes, a way to communicate with all of them and a way to create a support network that works for Northern New Mexico.
You must ask for what you want"
It just comes down to this: complaining is not positive action and it does not change anything. Because this is so new and because I am doing this all alone so far, I am going to share what I really want and what I can offer in the way of positive action towards creating a community of support in Northern New Mexico for families similarly touched by diabetes. I invite you to join in!
The Wish List
The holidays seem like a great time to start the conversation with a wish list. Here's mine.
- I'd like to have regular meetings or get-togethers so that the children can be around other children who are "just like them" and so that parents can be around others who have to deal with the same issues
- I'd like to set up regular events that families with children with diabetes can participate in
- I'd like to eventually create a meeting space
- I'd like to see the ADA and JDRF much more active in Northern New Mexico to support the many families here affected by diabetes
- And even going further, I'll say here that I hope the ADA will sponsor a day camp in Northern New Mexico in the summer for our kids to attend to.

Discussion
Maybe it's because I am such a talker myself, but I find that sharing with others who know what it's like to have a child with diabetes is a great relief. Just sharing the woes and the funny episodes of helping our children cope with the life altering diagnosis of diabetes relieves the pressure of having to deal with it on our own. My goal is offer as many possible venues for discussion as possible:
- Join the online discussion group: nnmdiabetes@yahoogroups.com
- Join us for our monthly Diabetes Support Group Meeting. Click here for information and directions to the next meeting.
Future plans
- Organize regular monthly or bi-monthly events and get-togethers for the NNM area
- Create a regular newsletter online
- Work with JDRF and ADA to get supported events in NNM
